I didn’t want to admit that I never came to the cemetery or that I wasn’t even sure where Katie’s grave was, but luckily we hadn’t walked very far when I recognized the obelisk with a dead governor’s name on it. That day at the funeral, when I wanted to look away from my mother’s tortured face or the white coffin topped with pink flowers, I’d stared at that dumb obelisk.

“Right down here,” I said, leading the way, past the obelisk a few rows.

Sure enough, there it was. Pink granite. Katie’s name. Wing to wing, oar to oar.

“What’s that mean?” Clementine said.

“It’s from a poem.”

“Funny how many people put poetry on their tombstones,” she said. “I don’t want poetry on mine. Just the basics. When people walk by, I want them to gasp and say, Oh! She died so young!”

“If you die young,” I said.

“I will,” she said.

She kneeled down and pressed her cheek to the stone. “Hi, Katie,” she whispered.

“But you don’t know that,” I said. “That’s one of the things that drives me crazy. We don’t have a clue when we—or anyone—is going to die. Katie had a perfectly normal day that day.”

“Well,” Clementine said, “I know I’m going to die young. You know, you need to get some flowers or something. It’s so empty here.”

“My mom takes care of that.”

“Well, apparently not. There’s nothing here.”

I realized I was staring at the obelisk.

“It’s so obnoxious,” Clementine said. “That giant thing, like he’s more important than Halley or Katie or anyone.”

I shrugged. “He was the governor.”

“One stupid term! In 1904!”

“Do you know every single grave in here?”

“I’m a very curious person,” she said.
